File recovery in Microsoft Word

  • Unexpected crash of your PC?  Did you just close the file by mistake without having the AutoSave feature activated? Many issues are causing you to lose your important work instantly. Fortunately, in Microsoft Word, you can still recover lost files by using the Document Recovery feature.
  • We highly recommend activating the AutoSave option to prevent losing word files.
  • In the case of unsaved documents, the Document Recovery feature temporarily keeps a copy of your recent lost/unsaved files.

Start recovering your unsaved files

First of all, you need to make sure you activated the auto-recovery feature.

1. In the upper left, click the File Tab.

2. Press Options button from the left menu.

3. Choose Save option -> In the Save documents section, make sure you have activated the two boxes

  • [x] Save AutoRecover information every x minutes. Here you have the freedom of choosing the frequency with which Microsoft Word auto recover your documents.
  • [x] Keep the last AutoRecovered version if I close without saving.

After checking the boxes press OK to save it. Now you are all set.

How to recover the unsaved documents?

Once you have activated the auto-recovery feature (see previous steps) you will be able to recover your lost files. Keep in mind that the recovery feature, temporarily keeps a copy of your recent lost/unsaved documents.

1. In the upper left, click the File Tab.

2. Press Info button -> Choose Manage Document option.

Now a dialog box will open -> Choose the Recovery Unsaved documents option.

  • It is good to know  that MS Word stores by default your unsaved files at this location C:\Users\vlad.huszti\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Word

3.  Now you can search for your missing files in the dialogue box. Your recent loss should appear here.

4.  Once you opened the recovered Word document, remember to save it by clicking the button at the top.
